Lamplugh CE School P.E. curriculum and sports premium funding.
Impact of expenditure 2016/2017
At Lamplugh School we use PE to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. We consider that PE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and it promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. From this we believe we enable the children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.
We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in PE lessons. Our aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding through a mixture of whole class teaching and individual or group activities. Staff draw attention to good examples of individual performances as models for the other children and we encourage the children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of others. Within lessons, we give the children the opportunity both to collaborate and to compete with each other, and they have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources. We plan PE activities so that they build upon the prior learning of the children. There is progression planned into our scheme of work, so that the children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.
Lamplugh School provides a range of PE related activities for children at the end of the school day. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of activity areas. Lamplugh CE School plays regular fixtures against other local schools. This is to introduce a competitive element to team games and allows the children to put into practice the skills that they have developed in their lessons. These opportunities foster a sense of team spirit and cooperation among our children.
The coordination and planning of the PE curriculum are the responsibility of the subject leader- currently Mr. Kolodynski, who also supports colleagues and evaluates the strengths and weaknesses in PE and indicates areas for further development.
As part of our additional Government funding we aim to improve the provision of Physical Education and sport in our school. We are providing a variety of opportunities both in and out of school, with many of our lessons over the last two years being delivered by specialist PE teachers and qualified sports coaches. This has provided excellent opportunities for staff development whilst enhancing our P.E. Lessons and providing links with local sports clubs.
This year we have evaluated the impact of the use of the Sports Premium for specialist coaches in school and are confident that all of our staff are now competent in delivering high quality P.E. lessons throughout the school.
P.E. equipment and resources are regularly updated and improved. We have recently purchased a variety of playground resources to help focus children during playtimes; promote healthy activities and aid physical and mental wellbeing.
• Children in Key Stage 2 will attend swimming lessons throughout a term, to ensure all of our children leave school being able to swim a minimum of 25 metres and be safe around water. Our allocated time in the water has increased to ten sessions of 30 minutes, giving the pupils over 5 hours of qualified coaching. By the end of swimming sessions in 2017, all Key Stage 2 pupils had achieved the expected standard and two pupils had reached the highest standard of level five.
Lamplugh CE School has deservedly developed a good sporting reputation in the local area. The school is regularly invited to local events based on fair play, friendliness and enthusiasm. As a result, the school received positive comments and feedback from event organisers and other school staff.
